When I first got the message about stepping in as the USA lead publicist for Nigerian boxer Damilare Arowolo, better known as "Ugly Wolf", I thought it was just another assignment—a chance to help push an incredible Guinness World Record attempt into the spotlight. Amebo Sports "said" Nella Writes we think you should come on board for this. After slight hesitation, I took the next meeting and the deal was sealed. To my surprise it became so much more: a life-altering opportunity to witness history, immerse myself in culture, and be part of a movement that extends far beyond boxing gloves and punching bags.

Ugly Wolf, a young man from Nigeria with fists as fierce as his heart is humble, is gearing up for something the world has rarely seen—60 hours of continuous punching bag work. Yes, you read that right. Sixty. Hours. Relentless discipline, mental toughness, and spiritual grounding all poured into a feat that would test anyone’s physical and emotional limits. And yet, when you sit with him, when you hear him laugh with his family, when you watch his friends rally around him—you realize the punches aren’t just about records. They’re about resilience, representation, and rewriting possibilities for African youth.

Being culturally in media, I often find myself at the crossroads of cultures. But this opportunity, working side by side with Gloves for Africa and Amebo Sports it was something different. It was a bridge. A chance to connect African brilliance with American audiences, using this historic record attempt as the spark.

One of the most memorable parts of this journey has been learning not just about Ugly Wolf, but the community that raised him. His family and friends didn’t just support from the sidelines—they carried him. Every training session echoed with encouragement, every late-night prep was surrounded by love, and every doubt was crushed by a village of believers. It reminded me so much of how our communities here in the States move—how when one of us rises, we all rise.

The event itself has been promoted across social media platforms—from viral Instagram reels to YouTube streams—and each post, each share, has felt like a drumbeat calling people around the world to pay attention. But behind those big headlines and flashy graphics is a deeply human story. A story of a young man who dared to dream past his circumstances, and organizations like Gloves for Africa who saw in him not just a talent, but a mission—to inspire an entire generation.

Stepping into this role, I’ll admit, I didn’t realize how special it would be. I didn’t know I’d meet people who would forever shift my perspective on resilience, collaboration, and cultural exchange. To sit in conversations with his mentors, to laugh with teammates, to feel the pride of communities in Lagos while sitting in my corner of the U.S.—this opportunity made me understand what happens when Africa and America truly connect. The energy is unstoppable.

As I prepare to watch Ugly Wolf lace up on May 21st and step into history at 8 AM sharp, I carry the weight of what I’ve seen and felt in this journey. This is more than a Guinness World Record attempt. This is about global storytelling, Black excellence, and the unshakable spirit of our people—whether in Nigeria, the States, or anywhere else in the diaspora.

For me, ugly was never the right word for Wolf. What I see is beauty—the beauty of legacy in the making, the beauty of family, and the beauty of a young man punching his way into history, one bag at a time. And I am so honored to have been part of it.
