The G.R.E.Y. Way LLC: From Bars to Building Bridges
When I first met Malachi Muhammad, founder of The G.R.E.Y. Way LLC, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d heard his name whispered in community conversations—a former inmate turned activist, a man on a mission to transform the system from the outside in. But sitting across from him, I quickly realized this wasn’t just a story about one man’s redemption. This was the beginning of a movement.
Malachi carries with him the kind of steady energy that stands on integrity—the presence of someone who has endured darkness and still chooses light. His company, The G.R.E.Y. Way LLC, is more than a business. It’s a lifeline for returning citizens who are stepping back into society after incarceration. For so many, those first steps are shaky, unsure, often met with closed doors. But Malachi built a door of his own and invited others to walk through it.
From Cell Blocks to Second Chances
Malachi's journey didn’t start in a boardroom; it started behind bars. He told us about the nights he spent crafting a vision when a future seemed impossible. “I wanted to prove that freedom wasn’t just about walking out,” he said. “It’s about building something once you do.”
The G.R.E.Y. Way offers re-entry resources that go beyond lip service—job placement assistance, clothing for those who come out with nothing but prison-issued uniforms, housing connections, mentorship and even encouragement through storytelling. Malachi partnered with Poetic Stories to amplify voices too often silenced by stigma. It’s more than interviews—it’s testimony. He allows folks to share where they’ve been, but more importantly, where they’re going.
A New Perspective on Incarceration
As a marketing strategist and journalist, I walked into this assignment thinking I’d simply report on a man doing good work. I didn’t expect to be personally moved. But listening to Malachi and the people he’s helped shifted my perspective entirely.
I realized how detached I had been from my own family members who’ve done time—how easy it is to reduce them to their charges or the mistakes they made, instead of their humanity. Malachi’s work inspired me not only to receive calls, but to send love, letters, and reminders that they’re more than their past. Understanding; thousands of innocent man and women are fighting for their lives as well. Moving forward I know being behind bars doesn’t mean your worth ends there.
The G.R.E.Y. Way is living proof. Lives have been rebuilt through the connections he’s helped fathers returning to children, daughters finding employment after release, brothers and sisters embracing freedom with guidance instead of judgment.
More Than Michigan
Although based in Michigan, Malachi’s plans to
stretch far beyond state lines. He’s starting to be involved with helping individuals in other states connect with resources, fight legal cases, and most importantly, believe in the possibility of a new life. In a society that often forgets the incarcerated, he’s rewriting their narrative: your sentence does not define you.
A Future in Freedom
Communities thrive when people are given second chances, and The G.R.E.Y. Way LLC is proof of that. It’s not just about helping individuals re-enter society—it’s about rewriting generational stories, changing how families view incarceration and shining a light on resilience.
Malachi Muhammad has turned his pain into a platform for others to rise. And in doing so, he has also shifted how I, and so many others on the Poetic stories team, view incarceration and redemption.
He reminds us there’s beauty in the rebuild. And when someone like Malachi pours his heart into others’ freedom, it reminds us that healing is as much collective as it is personal.
The G.R.E.Y. Way isn’t just about coming home.
It’s about creating home, opportunity, and the future our communities. Look out for The G.R.E.Y Way LLC as they collab with Poetic Stories.
