From Detroit Roots to Raw Denim: The Story of SALVIIA

In the heart of Detroit’s creative ecosystem, where grit meets imagination, brothers Challa and Ty are quietly building something intentional. As creatives rooted in Detroit and Metro Detroit, the duo is channeling culture, craft, and personal history into their fashion brand, SALVIIA.

For Challa, the spark started early. Skateboarding and skate culture laid the foundation—raw, expressive, and unapologetic. Add the influence of cultural icons like Kanye West and A$AP Rocky, and fashion became more than clothing; it became a language. Those inspirations didn’t just shape personal style—they planted the seeds for a brand.

Turning Ideas Into Reality

Running SALVIIA has impacted the brothers in more ways than one. “Fiscally, to say the least,” Challa jokes, but the real transformation has been psychological. There’s something powerful about taking an idea, committing fully to it, and watching it materialize. Seeing garments come to life creates a feeling that’s almost surreal—like being a magician. Creating clothes, like any art form, carries a kind of magic that reshapes how you see yourself and what’s possible.

The Meaning Behind the Name

SALVIIA isn’t just a name—it’s a bridge between past and present. The brand draws its name from the Latin salvia officinalis, a family of herbs that includes sage. Sage also nods to the brothers’ earlier creative chapter: their former band, SAUGE. The name represents growth, healing, and evolution—core principles woven into the brand’s DNA.

A Milestone Moment

One of SALVIIA’s biggest milestones so far has been the launch of their first piece: the Hemo Denim. For Challa, it was a defining moment—not only was it the brand’s first release, but it was also his first time ever making pants. The result? A high-quality pair of selvedge denim that set the standard for what SALVIIA aims to be: thoughtful, intentional, and uncompromising.

Looking Forward

While SALVIIA hasn’t collaborated yet, the future is wide open. Challa and Ty have their eyes on several potential partnerships, with a strong focus on working with local Detroit talent. Their goal is to spotlight quality designers within the city and build something rooted in community rather than hype.
